I grew up in a very rural area and often watched my parents fill in their absentee ballots at home since there were no polling places nearby. Though at this point I’ve lived in LA for more than half of my life, I still haven’t gotten over the thrill of actually going to the polls. I love walking to my neighborhood church and standing in line next to my neighbors. Each time, I am overcome by the wonderful feeling that I am part of something bigger than myself. But this year, Californians were sent mail-in ballots. I filled mine in at the dining room table, just like my parents used to, while my kids looked on. It turns out, there was something pretty sweet about that too.
